Stay Cool this Summer: 8 Tips for Cooking with Kitchen Appliances
Your outdoor kitchen is home to some of the best appliances you can utilize during the hottest days of summer.

The Okanagan has it all: lakes, vineyards, mountains, and the summertime sunshine it’s become known for. While the Okanagan sun is what draws in an abundance of tourism, it can be tough to battle for those of us with homes here, especially when cooking indoors.

Avoid the summertime swelter by avoiding the kitchen appliances indoors and utilizing these helpful cooking tips instead:

1. Cook outside.

It’s no surprise that generating heat outside instead of inside can help keep your kitchen cool. When possible, avoid firing up the range inside and use the barbecue outside instead.

2. Do your cooking early in the day.

If you have to use your oven and stove, cook first thing in the morning instead of later in the day. Since the morning is the coolest part of the day, your home will have more time to cool down again before the heat of the afternoon sun sets in.

3. Use your small appliances.

Instead of turning on your full-size oven, use a toaster oven instead. It’ll generate less heat. The same can be said for that air fryer you got for Christmas last year too.

4. Skip the lights.

If you have to do some cooking inside, don’t turn on the overhead lights. Use the range hood lights instead. You’ll generate less heat this way.

5. Pull the blinds.

If your kitchen and dining area windows have blinds or window coverings, use them to keep the sun out.

6. Grab the pressure cooker.

If you’ve got an Instant Pot, you’ll want to make good use of it during the summer. Because it cooks food quickly, it won’t heat the room around it.

7. Run the range hood.

If you’ve got a range hood, be sure to use it if you do end up cooking inside. It’ll suck the heat out of the kitchen and swiftly deliver it outside.

8. Don’t cook at all.

If the thought of standing over the stove is making you sweat, order take-out or enjoy a freshly tossed salad. Both of these options will be just as satisfying as a home-cooked meal.
