Skip the Repairs: Maintain Your Washers and Dryers Instead
Taking care of washers and dryers can reduce the amount of times you need to call in an appliance repairman.

Calling in a repairman can be a time-consuming venture. Although most appliance stores dispatch their techs as quickly as possible, you may still be left with a pile of dirty laundry while parts are on order. And since washers and dryers run at least daily in most households, it’s important to keep them in tip-top shape to prevent downtime and costly repairs.

On average, a washing machine’s life expectancy is roughly 12 years, but with the proper maintenance, you can potentially get nearly 16 years of use out of it. A dryer will typically last a little longer at 13 years, and last for almost 18 years if well looked after.

Protect your investments and skip the repair bill by performing these routine maintenance jobs:

Washers and Dryers Need a Schedule

To ensure the appliances Kelowna homeowners can’t live without are consistently taken care of, creating a maintenance schedule is a great habit to pick up.

After Each Cycle

Either before or after each load of laundry, try performing the following tasks:

  • Clean out the dryer lint filter
  • Keep the washing machine door partially open to allow air circulation
  • Quickly wipe down the door and seals on the washing machine to reduce the likelihood of mold and mildew build up and smells
  • Use the proper type of laundry soap, and make sure to use the correct amount
  • Always remove clothes from the pair as soon as possible

Each Month

Put a star on the same day each month on your calendar to help remind you that these jobs should be looked after:

  • Inspect the dryer exhaust ducts for damage
  • Inspect the hoses on the washing machine for damage
  • Using a solution of half water and half vinegar, clean the drums and seals
  • Refer to the owner’s manual first, then check and clean the drain pump filter on your front-loading washing machine
  • Wipe down the exterior of your machines

Every 3 – 6 Months

It’s a good idea to clean the dryer lint filter at least once a year to prevent any chemical build-ups that can prevent much-needed airflow. It’s also a good practice to pull the machines away from the wall and clean behind and below each one.

Once a Year

If you’re able to do so yourself, remove and clean the exhaust ducts that run from your dryer to the exterior of your home. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, call in an appliance expert. Clogged ducts can be really dangerous, and they are the number one leading cause in many house fires.

Safety Tips to Consider

In addition to maintaining washers and dryers, it’s really important to follow the following safety tips:

  • Don’t overload your loads
  • Always read the owner’s manual upon purchase and before performing maintenance or repairs
  • Reduce clutter around and on top of the pair
  • Don’t run a load while away from the home or while sleeping in bed
