Gas Ranges: Are You Using Natural Gas Appliances Safely?

Gas Ranges: Are You Using Natural Gas Appliances Safely?
Are your gas ranges and other natural gas kitchen appliances being used safely?

Natural gas appliances are fantastic for so many reasons: gas ranges are the perfect accessory for a chef or chef-in-training and natural gas BBQs eliminate the need for propane bottles. They’re also dependable, efficient, and an economical way of meeting your day-to-day cooking needs. However, it’s really important to make sure that these cooking appliances are being used in a way that keeps you, your family, and your home safe.

We’ve compiled a few tips to help ensure the safety of your loved ones and your home.

Safety Appliance Tips for all Natural Gas Appliances

1. Make sure your natural gas home appliances are in good working order and ensure they have proper ventilation. If you notice a strong rotten egg-like odour at any time, evacuate the home right away and call the fire department.

2. Paper, curtains, clothing, paints, and cleaning materials can pose a fire hazard, so it’s best to keep these items away from gas ranges, ovens, and BBQs.

3. Gas ovens and stoves should never be used as a space heater. Carbon monoxide can form and accumulate in your home if these appliances are used for anything other than cooking.

4. Do the colour test. If the flame is mostly blue, the burner is operating correctly. Small amounts of different coloured flames are OK, but a full yellow flame can indicate a problem with the appliance.

5. If the burner flame goes out, turn the knob off and wait for the gas to disperse before relighting.

6. You can prevent fire hazards by keeping gas appliances clean and maintained. In the unlikely event of a fire occurring, it’s always a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

7. During renovations or remodelling, it’s important to have a trained professional properly install your home appliances. In most cases, these professionals can even recommend some of the best brands in gas ranges, stoves and BBQs for your home.

8. When installing a gas BBQ on your deck or in your outdoor kitchen, make sure the area you choose is well ventilated and at least 10 feet away from the side of your home. This will reduce the chance of a fire occurring on your BBQ and spreading to your home.

Clean Your Gas Ranges Properly

Before cleaning your range, always make sure the burners, plates, and caps are completely cooled to reduce to risk of an injury. If you’re cleaning out the oven or BBQ, the same practices will apply.
