Whether you are a home gourmand or just one of the many Okanagan residents trying to put food on the table for your family, it doesn’t hurt to invest in cook ranges that not only help seal in flavour and nutrients, but that also cook your food evenly and in as little time as possible. To get the best cooking appliance advice, we asked Michael Bowman, one of our appliance experts at Genier’s Appliances store, what are the top kitchen appliances when it comes to ranges and what the reviews are saying about them.
When it comes to the choice between electric and gas ranges, it looks like gas is winning when it comes to overall sales.
“We are seeing an increase in induction ranges, but gas is still the overall best seller. The fully loaded machines with convection are the most popular,” says Michael.
As for the top-selling brands in the gas range category, Whirlpool and KitchenAid appliances tend to be the best sellers, while Fulgor, JennAir and Wolf appliances are the most popular for those looking to up the ante with a larger 36" or 48" unit.
In one of Consumer Reports appliances’ reviews on Best Ranges of 2018, KitchenAid’s 36” Pro-Style Range (KDRU763VSS) made the list for its high-powered burners that deliver heat quickly and for its superb simmering and even baking as well as for its large convection oven option.
As for electric ranges, Genier’s sells a lot of KitchenAid and Whirlpool in the typical 30” model range.
While white appliances will always be popular, as they fit into any kitchen’s colour scheme, Genier’s is also selling colour appliances in various hues.
Stainless steel is still a best seller amongst BC appliance buyers, while black stainless is coming up as a close second, says Michael. Whirlpool appliances’ brand new Sunset Bronze colour appliances, which are similar to the iPhone’s rose-gold colour, are also making their way to the sales floor at Genier’s.
“While the Sunset Bronze is fairly new and hasn't really caught on yet, it certainly is different and attractive. However, it does require a certain colour scheme in the kitchen. We do have a few pieces on the display floor now, including a dishwasher, fridge, electric range and a gas range,” says Michael.
Many Okanagan homeowners who have a large kitchen space to work with tend to be the ones purchasing wall ovens and separate cooktops over full ranges, says Michael.
“I would say that 75 percent of our customers go with a range instead of the two pieces separated.”
In a review of the Best Wall Ovens of 2018, Digital Trends made note of Whirlpool’s Gold 30-inch single wall convection oven as one that shines for its even and precise heat distribution as well as a steam clean function that cleans the oven without the use of harsh chemicals or scrubbing. It also comes in a range of colours from black, black ice, stainless steel and white.
According to Michael, there are a fair amount of appliance shoppers looking for induction, which uses magnetic energy to conduct heat between the heating surface and the metal object (pot or pan) that is placed atop it. While gas is still the best seller, KitchenAid and Bosch appliances have the market on induction ranges at Genier’s.
The Bosch Full-Depth Induction Slide-in Range is said to be one of the few of its kind on the market and even features a built-in roast thermometer, which lets you know when your food has reached its ideal core temperature.
Reviewers have noted the range for its sleek design, precise induction cooktop, as well as how fast the oven preheats and its wide selection of settings that bake, broil and heat food evenly.
