6 Ways to Keep Clothes, Washers and Dryers Immaculate
Keep your clothes, washers and dryers in peak condition with these 6 helpful tips.

Your washers and dryers are meant to keep your clothes and linens clean, but oftentimes laundry appliances aren’t routinely cleaned themselves. To help keep them able to keep your clothes in tiptop shape, check out some of these creative laundry hacks and tips.

1. DIY Detergent

It’s no secret that some of your favourite laundry detergents can harbour toxic chemicals, irritants, and even dyes. These additives can cause damage to both your clothes and your home appliances over time. Search for a DIY detergent recipe online instead of using store bought laundry soap, and you’ll be well on your way to ensuring your clothing and your laundry machines last for a really long time.

2. Make Your Towels Smell New Again

If your towels have seen better days, try washing them with baking soda and vinegar. This winning laundry combination can remove odours, boost absorbency, and return your towels to their former glory. This dirt-fighting solution cleans the inside of your washing machine too.

3. Skip Past the Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets can add a fresh smell to your laundry, but they can also cause a few problems. Not only do they decrease the absorbency in your towels, but they add an unnecessary expense to your grocery bill as well. Opt for a reusable dryer ball instead.

4.  Memorize Some Laundry Hacks

These hacks will have you loving laundry day:

  • Use a teaspoon of salt in the washing machine to prevent colour fading and to keep whites bright.
  • Turn your darks inside out before washing to prevent fading.
  • Pinch the laces of your running shoes between the door and the drum to prevent them from banging around inside during the dry cycle.
  • Use a salad spinner to remove excess water from items that you intend on air-drying.
  • Toss a dry towel into the dryer with a wet load of laundry to reduce drying time and increase efficiency.
  • Use a dry erase marker on the top of your washing machine to identify which items don’t belong inside your dryer.
  • If you can’t find your reusable dryer ball, create one yourself by balling up a sheet of aluminum foil.

5. Be Temp Savvy

Don’t forget to adjust your temperature setting with each load. Both clothing and detergents wash better at different temperatures. To maximize efficiency and ensure your clothes are being cared for properly, make sure the temperature settings are set accordingly.

6. Clean Your Machines Regularly

Washers and dryers require a little upkeep to keep them operating in peak condition. To make sure you get the most out of them, do a little maintenance monthly.
